Coming to your town: the Midwest Workshop Tour of Hackerspaces

For the rest of the month, I'm going on tour with Mitch Altman and
Jimmie Rodgers on their Midwest Workshop Tour of Hackerspaces.
We're visiting a number of hackerspaces in the Midwest, where Mitch
will be running workshops on how to solder, and spreading knowledge
about hackerspaces: The workshops will give anyone and everyone the
opportunity to learn to solder by making any number of kits that me
and Jimmie have created to teach people to make cool things with
microcontrollers -- kits that are designed so that everyone,
regardless of age or skill level, can complete successfully and
take home with them. It is very similar to what I do when I'm...
Make: Robot Build project submissions

Becky's preliminary robot build. Note the use of a sewing bobbin as
an idler wheel. We're absolutely thrilled with the response we've
gotten to the Make: Robot Build! The participation on the Forums,
Flickr, and on contestants' personal project blogs has been so
inspiring. We've heard from a lot of people that this project
inspired them to finally get off their behinds to learn basic
robotics, microcontrollers, basic programming, etc. Now we've
entered into the final build and submissions period. This runs
through the final contest deadline of May 7th, but if you've
already completed your bot, why wait? Pleas...
London Hackspace spacewarming party

Good news for London makers/hackers- the London Hackspace just
relocated to a newer, bigger venue, and is having a spacewarming
party to celebrate the move! Here's the details: The London
Hackspace is a non-profit, community-run hacker space in central
London. We provide a space where people who make things can come to
share tools and knowledge. We've just signed the lease on our new
workshop - "Laboratory 24" - in Shoreditch. This larger venue will
enable us to provide many more facilities than were possible in our
previous space. To celebrate our move we're having a party/open
evening on the 1st of August. This is a great chan...
Home-brewed, tenth-scale Cray-1A

When NYC Resistor's Chris Fenton wanted a Cray, he wasn't talking
about a casemodded PC. No, he really wanted his own Cray. His
exhaustively-researched machine simulates the functionality of one
of the old-school supercomputers, to the point where he's
researching old Cray resources looking for programs to run --
apparently you can't exactly download Centipede for the Cray off
the Internet, who knew? No hackerspace is complete without it's own
rockin' supercomputer - and when a Gibson isn't available, a Cray-1
will have to do. My 1/10-scale, binary-compatible Cray-1 is finally
done! This project took a long time (almost as long as my infamous
electromechanical ...
Updating a classic View-Master toy

Although he had fond memories of his View-Master toy, Tuttle of the
Nashville, TN hackerspace, Hacker Consortium, was frustrated by
it's antiquated film-based media. Instead of just tossing the toy
aside, he decided to use some cheap LCD keychain displays, and
modified the device for modern, stereo vision. Looks fun! Read the
